Gravity-wave detectors as probes of extra dimensions

چکیده

If string theory is correct, then our observable Universe may be a 3-dimensional “brane” embedded in a higher-dimensional spacetime. This theoretical scenario should be tested via the state-of-the-art in gravitational experiments – the current and upcoming gravity-wave detectors. Indeed, the existence of extra dimensions leads to oscillations that leave a spectroscopic signature in the gravity-wave signal from black holes. The detectors that have been designed to confirm Einstein’s prediction of gravity waves, can in principle also provide tests and constraints on string theory. email: [email protected], [email protected]

On Sub-Millimeter Forces From Extra Dimensions

We show that in theories with large extra dimensions forces mediated by a bulk dilaton and bulk gauge fields may be parametrically (exponentially) weaker than gravity due to the suppression of their wave-functions on a brane. This is the case when dilaton gets stabilized by certain strongly coupled dynamics on the brane, or the bulk gauge symmetries are spontaneously broken by the Higgs mechani...

Black Hole and Brane Production in Tev Gravity: a Review

In models with large extra dimensions particle collisions with center-of-mass energy larger than the fundamental gravitational scale can generate non-perturbative gravitational objects such as black holes and branes. The formation and the subsequent decay of these super-Planckian objects would be detectable in particle colliders and high energy cosmic ray detectors, and have interesting implica...

New Higgs Signals from Flavor Physics in Large Extra Dimensions

In a realistic theory with large extra dimensions and TeV scale gravity, there are often other particles living in the extra dimensions in addition to gravitons. A well motivated candidate is the flavon in a flavor theory which explains the smallness of the fermion masses by the large volume of the extra dimensions. The flavon interactions involve the Higgs field and can therefore give rise to ...

Majorana neutrinos with split fermions in extra dimensions

We propose new solutions to the neutrino mass problem in theories with large extra dimensions in a thick wall scenario. It has recently been argued that our 3-brane could be a thick wall at the boundary of the bulk. The gauge bosons and the Higgs scalars have an almost flat profile on this wall, while fermions could have localized profile with left-handed and right-handed components displaced w...

Supernovae as Probes of Extra Dimensions

Since the dawn of the new millennium, there has been a revived interest in the concept of extra dimensions. In this scenario all the standard model matter and gauge fields are confined to the 4 dimensions and only gravity can escape to higher dimensions of the universe. This idea can be tested using table-top experiments, collider experiments, astrophysical or cosmological observations. The mai...
